Ultrasurf
I have covered here before my experience inside a Call Center, where PCs were OpenDNS enabled which was very effective in blocking almost every second website on the internet especially Blogger but using Ultrasurf I was able to used the internet without any problem! My perennial search for a proxy server ended with UltraSurf proxy server application. It's an ultra light software which is way too fast and very small in size.
Other proxy servers that I stumbled upon were mostly web based and browsing speeds were lethargic. Many components like Javascript and Flash on websites were disabled and on top of that, pop-up ads. Damn!!!
How it works?
The way UltraSurf works is just magical. The application is sized around 200 KB and works sans installation. Just download the rar file, extract it and run the application. That’s it!!! An Internet Explorer window will open to confirm that the proxy server has been enabled. Any website like Facebook, Youtube, MySpace among others will work seamlessly in offices and schools where they are likely to be blocked.
It does not Work on Firefox by Default
UltraSurf is designed to work with Internet Explorer by default. But, with Firefox, a few steps need to be incorporated to make it work.
Here are some tweaks to perform in Firefox (2.X) to make it work:
1. Open Firefox and Click on Tools -> Options
2. Click on Advanced Link -> Network tab
3. Under Connections, click on Settings button
4. Change option to Manual Proxy Configuration
5. Populate the following: HTTP Proxy = 127.0.0.1 and Port = 9666
6. Check Use This Proxy Server for All Protocols
7. Hit OK to finish and you are done, bingo!!!
The Best Part
I have checked with the help of their network administrator and this application doesn’t leave any traces behind. The address is hidden and so is the origin IP address. Network admins can never make out that the proxy server has been enabled and there is no dang proof on your system to suggest that you have used the application. Just ensure to keep UltraSurf at a hidden location and share this love with your colleagues.
With this, it enables users inside countries with heavy Internet censorship to visit any public web sites in the world safely and freely.
Users in countries without internet censorship also use it to protect their internet privacy and security.
